Module Purpose
Successful completion of this module will enable the learner to develop management
strategies for human resources in a recreation or fitness service, or facility.
Pre-requisites
Learners doing the Advanced Diploma in Recreation Studies course must complete this
module as a core study before starting stream or elective studies.
Recreation Administration and Management I is normally seen as a pre-requisite for this
module within the Advanced Diploma in Recreation Studies.
This unit may also be taken individually in its own right.
Pre-requisite is Recreation Administration and Management I.
Relationship to Competency Standards
All tasks shall comply with the relevant practices and procedures set out by industrial awards and relevant Australian standards.

Content
Focus should be on the learning outcomes and not on content. Some topics may not
require in-depth teaching in this module as they will be addressed fully elsewhere.
In achieving the learning outcomes, the following topics should be addressed:
* work schedules
* management of team work
* team performance
* new staff recruitment
* management of recruitment staff
* evaluating performance
* communication.
The learner will visit different locations, such as health clubs, gymnasiums,
recreation centres, sportsgrounds and clubs, to research, photograph and specify those
facilities as the basis for assignment questions.

Assessment method
The learning outcomes may be assessed through:
* essay;
* short answer and multiple choice questions;
* written assignments;
* illustrations;
* photographs;
* practical tasks;
* samples;
* examination of 1.5 hours.
Conditions of assessment
Assessment is based on successful completion of all set tasks, assignments and any other assessment method listed above. Examinations will consolidate material taught in lessons to assess the learning progress of the learner. It will also act as a method of ensuring learners meet the outcomes.

Manage work schedules.
Assessment Criteria
1.1 Prepare a work schedule, in accordance with a given job specification.
1.2 List items of information which legally must be maintained in staff records.
1.3 Explain three different methods of maintaining work records.
1.4 Calculate pay for a specified case study, including deductions for taxation and superannuation.
1.5 Write a procedure for the maintenance of essential work records, in a specified recreation workplace, and in accordance with Quality Assurance Standard 9002.

Learning Outcome 2
Learning Outcome
Manage a work team.
Assessment Criteria
2.1 Explain two different delegation techniques appropriate to a specified recreation workplace.
2.2 Develop procedures to ensure three different work tasks in a recreation workplace
are performed in accordance with employer policy.
2.3 Plan three work programs, for three different situations, including:
*delivery of a specified activity program
*maintenance of a specified recreation facility.
2.4 Develop a procedure to monitor work performance which satisfies the
Quality Assurance Standard 9002.

Learning Outcome 3
Learning Outcome
Develop work team performance, to improve productivity and efficiency.
Assessment Criteria
3.1 Develop criteria for evaluating team performance in two different situations.
3.2 Evaluate performance of a team, using criteria developed in 3.1.
3.3 Analyse evaluation made of the performance of a work team.
3.4 Develop recommendations for improvement of work team performance evaluation.
3.5 Develop a summary for a work team training program, in response to specified
recommendations which have been developed.

Learning Outcome 4
Learning Outcome
Manage the recruitment of new staff.
Assessment Criteria
4.1 Analyse staff needs in two different recreation workplaces visited by the learner, to
determine areas where adjustments may be desirable for allocated manpower hours.
4.2 Explain the purpose of job specifications, including control of work tasks.
4.3 Develop strategies to locate potential employees, for a two different specified situations in the recreation industry, detailing those strategies.
4.4 Write copy for a two specified job advertisements, including:
*a classified of thirty five words
*a small display advertisement.
4.5 List criteria for staff selection, in a specified situation.
4.6 Plan a standard job interview, in accordance with a given job specification,
to run for twenty minutes.
4.7 Explain initiation procedures for a new member of staff, in accordance with a given
job specification and specified situation.
4.8 Define "probation period" in a specific workplace.
4.9 Compare the legal implications of recruiting new staff in accordance with two
different specified procedures.
4.10 Explain differences in staff recruitment processes in two different large organisations.

Learning Outcome
Manage performance of individual members of staff.
Assessment Criteria
5.1 Explain two different methods of assessing work productivity.
5.2 Design an Employee Performance Appraisal Form for a specified situation in
the recreation industry.
5.3 List difficulties in using employee appraisal forms.
5.4 Evaluate the performance of two different employees, in two different recreation
workplaces, using staff appraisal forms.
5.5 Develop a list of procedures to review changes, in the skills of an employee.
5.6 Explain career advancement opportunities for staff in two different recreation
workplaces studied by the learner.
5.7 Explain career paths for different two different specified recreation industry jobs
using illustrations.

Learning Outcome
Maintain good communication with staff.
Assessment Criteria
6.1 Explain the purpose of staff meetings in a specified recreation organisation.
6.2 Explain the effectiveness of communication systems between staff and
management in two different, specific, recreation organisations.
6.3 Write an organisational procedure, to provide management with feedback from
employees on any work related issues.
6.4 Explain three different techniques of conflict resolution, appropriate to a specified
problem in the workplace.
6.5 List guidelines for maintaining morale in a workplace.

Learning Outcome
Deal with staff grievances.
Assessment Criteria
7.1 Explain three different types of grievance, in a specific workplace.
7.2 Explain the role of an employee or union representative in dealing with a grievance.
7.3 Explain the role of a supervisor in dealing with a grievance in a specific case study.
7.4 List guidelines to follow when dealing with a grievance.
7.5 Develop a formal procedure for dealing with grievances in a specified workplace
situation.
