Module Purpose

Successful completion of this module will enable the learner to develop management

policy, procedural and planning aspects of a recreation oriented service or facility.

 

Pre-requisites

Learners doing the Advanced Diploma in Recreation Studies course must complete this

module as a core study before starting stream or elective studies.

 

Recreation Administration and Management III is normally seen as a pre-requisite for this

module within the Advanced Diploma in Recreation Studies.

 

This unit may also be taken individually in its own right.

Pre-requisites is Recreation Administration and Management III.

 

Relationship to Competency Standards

All tasks shall comply with the relevant practices and procedures set out by industrial awards and relevant Australian standards.

(QFSRITC) MGT501, PLN501, POP501, MGT601, PLN601, POP601, POP602, RPT601.

 

Content

Focus should be on the learning outcomes and not on content. Some topics may not

require in-depth teaching in this module as they will be addressed fully elsewhere

(such as Business Studies and Computer Studies).

 

In achieving the learning outcomes, the following topics should be addressed:

* policy development and management

* operational procedures

* planning process management

* meeting and conference management

* supervise reports.

The learner will visit different locations, such as health clubs, gymnasiums, recreation centres, sportsgrounds and clubs, to research, photograph and specify those

facilities as the basis for assignment questions.

 

Assessment strategy

Assessment method

The learning outcomes may be assessed through:

* essay;

* short answer and multiple choice questions;

* written assignments;

* illustrations;

* photographs;

* practical tasks;

* examination of 1.5 hours.

 

Conditions of assessment

Assessment is based on successful completion of all set tasks, assignments and any other assessment method listed above. Examinations will consolidate material taught in lessons to assess the learning progress of the learner. It will also act as a method of ensuring learners meet the outcomes.

 

 

Learning Outcome 1

 

Learning Outcome

Influence the development of organisational policy.

 

Assessment Criteria

1.1 List areas of policy issues to be addressed in different types of organisations

including:

-Health club -Sporting Club -Community Recreation Centre.

1.2 Explain how two different organisations develop policy.

1.3 Compare two alternative policies in two different case studies, in each of a number of

different areas, including:

*Refund policy *Customer service *Pricing.

1.4 Write an outline of policies based on information researched about the management

of a specific recreation facility in the learners locality.

Learning Outcome 2

 

Learning Outcome

Manage organisational policy.

 

Assessment Criteria

2.1 Explain the risks associated with a lack of clearly defined policies

in the workplace.

2.2 Evaluate two different existing management policies in different organisations

including:

-Health club -Sporting club -Community Recreation Centre.

2.3 Prepare a report recommending change to a specific policy, in a case study.

2.4 Write a procedure which conform with Quality Assurance Standard 9002,

to control adherence to a policy within a specific recreation enterprise.

Learning Outcome 3

Learning Outcome

Manage the adherence of staff to operational procedures.

 

Assessment Criteria

3.1 Describe in three reports, methods used in three different workplaces visited

by the learner, to control the adherence of staff to operational procedures.

3.2 Write a procedure for process control in a specific workplace, which conforms

with Quality Assurance Standard 9002.

3.3 Compare three different options of response to an employee, who consistently fails

to conform to an operational procedure, in a specified case study.

Learning Outcome 4

 

Learning Outcome

Develop a planning process which is well defined and appropriate.

 

Assessment Criteria

4.1 Compare different planning processes, used by three different recreation, fitness or

sport organisations.

4.2 List activities requiring planning in different recreation, fitness and sport organisations.

4.3 List factors requiring consideration in planning different activities.

4.4 Write mission statements for three different types of recreation organisations.

4.5 Review a collection of information relevant to preparation of a draft plan for provision

of a service.

4.6 Analyse information relevant to preparation of a draft plan for provision of a service.

4.7 Prepare a draft plan for the provision of a service including:

*A delivery procedure *List of require resources *Cost estimates.

Relevant standards or extracts will be made available to the learner for reference during

lessons. As will conditions of assessment.

 

 

Learning Outcome 5

 

Learning Outcome

Manage the planning process.

 

Assessment Criteria

5.1 Explain procedures for approval of plans for provision of services and

facilities, in different two different recreation case studies.

5.2 Explain how a plan for a service was successfully implemented in a recreation

situation reviewed by the learner.

5.3 Explain how the implementation of a plan for a service was monitored in a recreation

situation reviewed by the learner.

5.4 Explain how the implementation of a plan for a new recreation facility

was monitored during construction in a situation reviewed by the learner.

5.5 Explain mechanisms which might be used to modify plans if necessary to allow

for contingencies, in a specified situation.

Learning Outcome 6

 

Learning Outcome

Develop management strategies to improve the success of a conference or seminar.

 

Assessment Criteria

6.1 List factors to be addressed in planning a conference or seminar.

6.2 Design a conference or seminar program, for a specified situation in the recreation

industry.

6.3 Prepare an itemised conference budget, in accordance with a given program.

6.4 Compare alternative ways in which a specified conference might be promoted.

6.5 Analyse in a report, the management of a conference or seminar attended

by the learner.

6.6 Explain conference administration procedures, used by a successful conference,

including:

-Registration -Processing proceedings -Pre & post conference activities.

 

Conditions and method of assessment

The learner will be required to attend a conference or seminar, and interview its organisers,

in order to analyse the management of that event.

 

Relevant standards or extracts will be made available to the learner for reference during

lessons.

 

Assessment will be based upon:

* Receipt and program from conference or seminar attended;

* Written assignments;

* Examination.

 

 

Learning Outcome 7

 

Learning Outcome

Manage committee meetings in the recreation industry.

 

Assessment Criteria

7.1 Explain the protocol to be followed when conducting a meeting in a specific situation

observed by the learner.

7.2 Explain the respective roles of members of a specific committee which

the learner observes at a meeting.

7.3 Explain standard committee procedures, designed to maintain control

in the committee process.

7.4 Explain how decisions made in a specified committee meeting, are

enacted.

7.5 Analyse the constitution of a recreation or sporting club in it's relevance to

club meetings.

7.6 Analyse in a summary report, the effectiveness of the way in which the

committee system is managed in a specified recreation situation.

Learning Outcome 8

 

Learning Outcome

Manage the development of reports.

 

Assessment Criteria

8.1 List formal reporting responsibilities within an organisation.

8.2 Compare two reports from similar departments in different organisations.

8.3 Explain procedures used for dealing with reports in two different organisations.

8.4 Analyse two different examples of reports from a recreation organisation which is

familiar to the learner.

8.5 Recommend action based on the analysis of the reports in 8.4.
