Fish Facts
There is a huge diversity of life that exists in the water and there is so much to learn about fishes and marine life.
Here are some interesting facts relating to fish:
- Some fish, such as the Great White Shark, can raise their temperature when they are hunting in the cold sea.
- The oldest known age of a fish, was 65 years old. This was an Australian lungfish.
- Jellyfish and starfish are not actually fish.
- Electric eels’ electrical rays are so strong that they could kill a horse.
- The only fish that have eyelids are sharks.
- Most fish are known to have taste buds all over their body.
- A fishing hook has been discovered that is 42,000 years old.
- Most fish can see in colour.
- Fish will use colour to camouflage themselves.
- Fish can also use colour to defend their territory.
- When a fish grows it does not add new scales, their original scales just increase in size.
- Most fish are not able to swim backwards, however, fish from the eel family can.
- Seahorses are the only fish which are able to swim upright.
- A seahorse is also the slowest fish. Humans are sometimes not able to tell if it is moving because it is so slow.
- It is believed that there are approximately 32,000 different kinds of fish currently.
- Sharks and some fish do not have an air bladder to help them stay afloat, so they have to swim continuously or rest on the bottom.
- Fish are not able to chew.
- Most fish are known to be cold-blooded.
- Fish are not able to blink.
- Goldfish have teeth.
- Goldfish are able to hear; however, they are not able to respond back.
- Whales have belly buttons.
